Catchup With Hanz0

I got on irc today and to my surprise, saw Hanz0 chatting away in #Toribash. After leaving for some time due to College commitments, hanz0 was bored and decided to come back and check out his old forum.
He was also kind enough to spare some time for me to hit up a quick interview.

[13:06]Solax: So what’s it like to be back after so long?

[13:06]Hanz0: Eh. Can’t say that I feel that much. It’s nice to not have people immediately jumping at me for assistance (for the most part), though.

[13:07]Hanz0: Mostly been hanging out in IRC today, anyways. Not back to the forums quite yet.

[13:08]Solax: Have you noticed many changes around? New staff, new rules, general changes?

[13:09]Hanz0: Like I said, I haven’t looked at the forum too much yet, but I have noticed some new staff. Lots of old faces, though.

[13:09]Hanz0: Faces? Usernames? Whatever.

[13:09]Solax: Avatars*

[13:09]Hanz0: Possibly.

[13:10]Solax: Are you aiming to get back to where you were before you left or are you going to hang back a bit and relax, let the flow take you?

[13:11]Hanz0: I’m not really looking to get my old spot back, really. At the moment college takes priority, and I don’t really have the time or the inclination to deal with all the little things people need solved all the time.

[13:11]Hanz0: If anything, it’d be nice to have a more behind-the-scenes position of some sort.

[13:12]Solax: So with college and other commitments, what motivated you to return?

[13:13]Hanz0: Kind of a spur-of-the-moment thing. I kept getting emails telling me that my inbox is full of PMs and people are still trying to message me, and people I kept in contact with were asking if I was planning to come back, etc.

[13:13]Hanz0: Just got bored this morning and decided to hop on IRC.

[13:16]Solax: If you could say one thing, anything to the rest of the community, a hate phrase, a motivational message to beginners, a greeting to old friends, what would it be?

[13:18]Hanz0: Uh. I don’t care enough to hate anyone. Beginners should read rule threads before posting (Presumably they still don’t do that – things like that don’t ever change). Already greeted the people I’d meant to greet.

[13:18]Hanz0: I’m not exactly one for motivation and catchy messages. :P

So if you see someone with an avatar of a guy with squiggly eyes and a dead horse on the ground, it’ll be Hanz0.

The Relationship Between Ingame Users and Stupidity

Hey Toribash! So, over a series of complex social experiments and an experienced eye for stupidity, I’ve noticed a recurring trend in the general forum and ingame population. My question to you guys is: why are people who actually play the game so stupid? I decided to undercover (seeing as I’m a huge celebrity) to test my [obviously correct] hypothesis. The usual outcome:

or, alternatively...

Not only is there a clear lack of human morality (and the inability to communicate), but also just a general undertone of stupidity…why is that? Well, let’s investigate, shall we? Now, the obvious anticipated speculation regarding my hypothesis would probably have to do with these users’ ages, and that could be one of the many probably causes, but I have a different take on it. Well, not really, frivolous and seemingly dumb interactions from people similar to the ones listed above, could be correlated to social experience (in Internet standards) and other retarded habits acquired with introduction to it. With further exposure (most of the time, but sadly not always), these former pieces of mentally dysfunctional troll-bait will become outstanding citizens of our fine community!  Just watch, that semi-retarded user with a reference to pre-adolescent pop culture surrounded by multiple x’s persistently trying to sell that marine blood in that judofrac tourney will become an intelligent, contributing Toribashian in due time! Well, that’s all for now, send me a message if you want me to rant about a particular Toribash-related subject. So long!

Unibash-Recruiting Teachers

Hey awesome Toripeople,

Remember Unibash? That cool sub forum in Beginner Sanctuary? Well, Zinx has been working long and hard trying to maintain it and now that it’s all fixed up, he needs new teachers to staff and run it. If you are bilingual, trilingual, multilingual or just unilingual (is that a word?), send Zinx an app and give back to the community, what it has given to you. All you need to include is your GMT, pre experience, languages and irc activity/availability.
Come on Toribash, have a go.

Fresh meat on the clans horizon…

Adventure Clan Logo

Yup, seems that the latest clan to become official is Adventure, led by Muur and Silco. Well done to them on getting a clan up and running.

Oh, and if you feel up to it, why not challenge them to a clan war? ;o

GameMaster Apps Are Open

It’s that time, the time all user groups go through. The dreaded; slacking and inactivity! Yea yea, a bit exaggerated but the point stands clear. The GameMasters are low on numbers. 3 members are promised to be accepted and according to Shin, everyone has a 50% chance. (Don’t question how that works if more than 6 people apply) Apps are open until the 20th of February at 6pm GMT.Get in quick or miss out! I don’t really see why they need replacements. Must be some serious problems going on in the current team of 12.

Regardless, the community will watch and wait, all wondering who the 3 new GameMasters will be. Happy applying, and may the odds be forever in your favor.

The Game: Only a Gateway to the Forum?

While trying to decide what my first official blog entry was to be, I realised something. Toribash (the actual game) was just a gateway to the forum for me. I first played this game in early 2008 on my friend’s account. Getting my own computer, I made my own in late 2008. I played for about a year. Ever since, any involvement in Toribash that I have stems from the forums. It was great fun while it lasted, but I just lost interest in the game over time. In realising this, I wondered if the same thing happened to the other users; I mean, the last two events proposed by the Clan Admins had absolutely nothing to do with the game itself.

Two out of three people answered negatively when asked if they still played the actual game. One answered that Minecraft completely destroyed any aspiration he had to play Toribash, but the forums were still entertaining despite the fact. It is extraordinary that socialisation itself can be more entertaining than the interactive media it is based on. I decided to go in-game and ask a few people what they thought. Oddly enough, the few people I asked (a 5th dan and a 6th dan) claimed that they do not use the forum very much at all, other than for market purposes. It seems like a lot of people who play don’t use the forum, and a lot of people who use the forum don’t play. Despite not playing the game, you will probably use the forums for a long time if you are now.

It sort of makes you wonder if there are other game-specific communities out there that aren’t utterly in-game active, or if we are just special in our own way.

Until I think of something else to write about, happy posting :D

To Toribash With Love

Valentines day is soon approaching! If you don’t have a valentine then you only have 2 days to get one. Come on guys, don’t be shy, write a poem, pop some champagne and roll your heart out. The GameMasters have a fantastic event on at the moment, “Kick Cupids ass” and I really recommend you check it out. If you rather not take part there are still ways to show your love to the game and everyone around you. Maybe put on some heart shaped trails or put a big, red kiss mark on your head. Maybe even make a special valentines day texture set.

Happy Valentines day Toribash. Love is in the air.

Event team

Well, as you know the ToriAgent group and the Gamekeeper group has been merged into a whole new group, the Gamemasters.
Although there is a problem with this new GM group, they don’t hold forum events.
What should we do now?
[laugh]
Meamme0 is the person you are searching for! He made a new group especially for event hosting.
You’re wondering what do I think in this situation?
I think that it’s very interesting, because this new event team is full of famous people, such as:
Leader
Meamme0

Members
Oblivion
Dexter
Bisonic
Larfen
R4ff
Ruki

Alright, lets join in their super creative events now!

Entry: New Bloggers

As you guys might have noticed, Slip Anc started accepting applications for new bloggers. A few of the more well-known writers claim that they have sent applications, so the competition will probably be tough. The future-bloggers will receive forum recognition through a usertitle, a personal blogger’s account, and “Total Awesomeness”, of course. These perks are likely to attract many applications. These openings are an awesome opportunity for many of you who would enjoy being involved, and know how to write. I’m personally looking forward to the talent that will be displayed to the community through these blogs. As soon as the spots are filled and names are released, I’ll update you guys.

Wibbles Reform

As you all know, Wibbles is in desperate need of a makeover; one that would require more than just the occasional five day ban to a mentally dysfunctional poster. No, friends, Wibbles is in need being completely re-altered, a fresh new start to redeem itself from the notorious shit-spawn of bad trolling and overused memes.

Yes it would be a demanding, and to some an almost impossible task, but this is change we can believe in…a pretecessor to greater, healthier Wibbles. Reverting the board back to “pre-Rapid Thread” quality is the easy part, however making the board STAY that way for over a week would be the much more challenging and rigourous half of it. You see, the previous attempts to change Wibbles failed miserably for a multitude of reasons, but here is the most promintent: nazism. Yes well, sort of, let me elaborate. Moderators cracked down too hard and laid too many bars in only a concentrated period of time…so it’s like trying to run a marathon by sprinting as fast as you can and stopping after ten seconds, get it?

Well, to basically summarize my rant there would need to be boundaries set in stone, a clear-cut system to what you CAN and CAN’T do. Easy enough? Make it happen Toribash!

Peace,

~pika

Clan Admins stepping up to the plate

As we approach the end of Janurary, it is becoming evident that 2011 will be a year filled with change. Super Moderators openly recruiting, GameKeepers and ToriAgents merged together into the GameMasters, spots being filled in the staff quicker than ever, and all of this in the first month of the year! In the midst of all this reform, the Clan Admins have finally decided to step up to the plate and do some work themselves. Usernames Gynx and Lightningkid, two of the three former Clan Admins, have been removed from their posts and substituted by usernames Uric and Alan due to inactivity. Along with the new staff members taking close care of the clans section, clan events have also started emerging. The first of what will become a series of weekly events hosted by username Fish requires a member of each participating official or unofficial clan to post a detailed clan story for the prize of ten thousand toricredits. Expect interactive events similar to this one and don’t be shy to sign up for one!

How many brix have been shat on the process of reading this?

Introducing GameMaster

For log time, there were to groups that moderated in-game.

There were Gamekeepers and ToriAgents

Gamekeepers where in charged of tournaments and acted like in-game police.

And ToriAgents, acted as server sitters, that means that they just sit at newbies servers such us Begginers or Intermidiate servers, and they made sure everything run ok and prevent bans.

Now, there is a new moderation class, with merged Gamekeepers and ToriAgents, they are called GameMasters.

GameMasters, have the same function of GameKeepers and ToriAgents, so they are encharged of everything that happens in-game, such as tourneys, events, in-game police and fun stuff.

New Smods are in the building!
After a week of apps and intense waiting, seven new smods have been chosen and are now hitting up the forums, handing out bans and infractions, eager to make their mark on Toribash for ever. They will be the next generation of police, law enforcers and supporters. The seven lucky dwarfs now basking in blue are BlackBear, Boredpayne, Enzu, Gynx, Ravenger, Raya75 and war_hero. Watch out for these guys, make a slip and they’ll be on your ass and you’ll end up like Gorman! The ban list’s first page is full of fresh and funny cases of miserable members, breaking the rules of the forum. Boredpayne has already handed out 16 perm bans, all for sock puppet alts. This guy, serious about his crime and punishment. He’s like the Judge Judy of the forums. Our hearts go out to you Bored and we all hope that you can find and extinguish the last of these pesky alts. Also on the list is young Enzu, having only joined the forums in February of 2010, he must have really made an impression in the last year and I’d wager that he has much more to show us. Also on the list is a guy called war_hero, heard of him? I just don’t understand why he hasn’t got Smod before now?
All in all, these guys deserve it. The competition was fierce and they arose to the challenge. Happy banning guys, and happy reading Toribash.

~Solax

‘sup guys,

Ever had a problem with staff members amusing their powers? *cough*shin*cough*
Oh, and jalis is gone now, so no point complaining about him. ;o

Anyway, the new Complaint Box is the place to go if you feel any of the staff members have been particularly nasty to you. Feel their moderation sucks? Then come here and express your feelings; let us know :3

The Box is hiding in Discussion, above the blog news. Be sure to read the rules, ’cause if you didn’t you’d be stupid.

Happy complaining,

Carl.

Now after these awesome posts note that I’m still waiting for a few applicants to send in their examples.

These guys will now proceed to be absolutely and totally awesome :)

Cheers!
